surface Soldering MSOP10 ic

Hi,

Just bought some MSOP10 pin ics for a project, but I didn't realise just how small they are 3mm X 3mm chip body with 10 pins. I am intending to make a circuit board, time will tell if I can achieve the fine detail.

So how do I solder them to a circuit? I have seen adapters, to convert them to 10pin DIP, which is an option. Unless anyone has experience of surface soldering on this scale and can give me advice please.

One technique of soldering these small ICs is that first you make an appropriate etching of pads in the PCB, put some solder on the pads, place the IC accurately over it, then heat the PCB in a frying pan. This will melt the solder in the PCB and the IC will stick with it. If you have heat gun then your work will become more easy. You can apply some glue in the middle of the base of IC to make it easy to stick it with PCB for soldering.

This can be soldered with flux usage, also you must have good soldering station, alternative to that is to use soldering paste and hot air soldering station. We assume that your hands are steady and you have good eyesight. I soldering even smaller parts without problems, after soldering I use PC microcope for inspection.

Key is in flux!

I suggest to watch videos about soldering tutorials on YouTube. There is many ways and methods.

How do I gauge how much solder to put onto the PCB? Do I just wipe it, till it is silver.

I'm afraid, I can't afford good tools, but I think I can adapt what I have for a short run like this. Also I don't have good eyesight any more, but again, I can add lenses till I do

What possible smaller parts can there be?, I laugh when I even look at these chips because they are so small.

I have a microscope!

Often I solder wires on JTAG connector place in Samsung Galaxy S2 S3, soldering place is wide 2mm and on each side several very thin wires.

With good expirience and skills you can neglect and balance lack of equipment quality.

Practice soldering and dessoldering on some PCB (video card, PC motherboard, RAM cards, ....

Use flux always. Price of flux vary and can be very expensive, you can use any in middle or cheaper class Clean-Free. Also its good to have Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning flux and PCB in general.

Just a little bump on each pad, about thickness of the copper layer in a PCB. Too much solder can short its near pins and less solder will fail to hold the pins. something like this...

I had a look at your suggestions, but the chips, I'm talking about are much smaller. 3mm X 3mm with 10 pins.

Hello,
You can also build a refloW oven using a domestic oven. It is cheap, you only need to add a solid state relay and a temperature controller to manage the ramps. This is the method I use now for soldering small components.
