Looking at your modification jpeg schematics, simply putting the external mosfet (irfbe30) in parallel with the internal mosfet (inside smr40000) will not work if this internal mosfet is short across GDS (terminals 2,3& 4 respectively). However, your modification only works if the internal mosfet is blown open-circuit.
