Is it possible to keep a smartphone device stored in the long term, preventing the non-removable battery with flat cable from becoming swollen and leaking?

I have the Lithium battery from my daughter's first cell phone that is at least 20 years old. Its battery is fine because it is a Name Brand.

Why do batteries of smartphones and tables swell and leak? is it possible to keep a smartphone stored in the near future with the battery in it to prevent the battery from blistering and leaking?
