psychoacousticsound delay

hello

i have a source producing a sound. this sound is received by single target but through 2 ways (channels) with some delay.
what maximal delay should be between the 2 channels so the human will be able to hear the sound in good way (without echo for example)?

sound delay

You may want to search psychoacoustic literature for details, as far as I remember, the perception threshold for individual acoustical events is in the 10 ms to 20 ms range. Apart from disturbing echos, you should be aware of interferences distorting a linear frequency transmission.

Re: sound delay

Suppose that you have a sound signal x(t).
when an echo occurs the delayed part of the original sound is attenuated and so the resulatnt signal has the form y(t)=x(t)+αx(t-d) where α<1 is the attenuation constant.
so since x(t) is stronger than αx(t-d) it can mask the effect of the delayed part if d<150 ms and you can not recognize the existence of echo.

Re: sound delay

For delays of about 10 ms the most noticeable effect is a sever degradation of bass. For delays of less than 1ms the effect is to consider the sound comming out of the speaker whose sound is in advance. In auditioning this phenomenon, along with a proper change in the sound volume, is effectively used to convey direction of sound and movement of objects.

in the 10 ms to 20 ms range
