You might find a gear has slipped a tooth or two, or possibly a whole turn. It pulls the the cassette enclosure partly closed, then reaches the end of its travel. The enclosure is still ajar.
To fix it will require that you figure out how it works, and gently if possible, persuade the gear to engage at its normal position. If you are forceful it could break.
