What is solder mask alignment?

Thanks in advance.

i feel it would be alignment of soldermask layer to drill or electrical layers

The solder mask is a layer where it is expected to leave the copper exposed which is then tinned. The rest area will be covered by the solder mask. The pads where the solder mask should'nt be applied needs to be alligned first so as not to mask the soldering areas of the PCB. This proceidure is usually called the solder mask alignment.
Cheers
