Software for uploading .hex file in a PIC microcontroller ?

Hi there,

I want to make a GUI application for uploading .hex files in PIC microcontrollers. I know there are free applications but I want to do this for learning purpose.
I can take care of GUI interface but at the very basic level, I want to select a .hex file and upload it in a PIC microcontroller.
where should I start?
Is there any kind of tutorial?
Is there any open source code to learn from?
