SIM900 not responding to AT commands

Hello,

I am usind ICOMSAT SIMCOM900 GSM Shield with Arduino UNO . The GSM Shield displays

RDY

+CFUN: 1

+CPIN: READY

Call Ready

on startup and also responds to incoming call but when i send any AT command , it responds with ERROR.
What can be the problem?

i want to know how much ampere current is needed by sim900?

i have connected my sim900 to a lcd and AT89S51...i m giving input from an 12v 500mA
adapter converted to 5v later...my mcu is working properly with lcd but when i send a command to sim900A i receive a a 5X7 matrix boz on the lcd
do you lnow anything about it?
