can anyone explain what is phase, its a physical measurement like length or can be measured by graphs,please...

What is the phase difference between sine and cosine curve? just plot sine curve in red and cosine in blue. label the x axis as 0,pi/2, pi, etc.. . Now what can u say about the curves you have drawn? are they same if u do something("change phase by pi/2") to anyone of them?
