signal compression using wavelets

I am doing a project on signal compression(eg ECG) using wavelet transform..In this I have to design a new wavelet that can achieve a decent compression ratio. I have read a lot of text on Wavelet Transform, but don't know how to apply that in Matlab.
I tried the compression using Daubechies wavelets(db3 and db6), but the problem is how can I measure the compression ratio, and how can I change the coefficients of these wavelets in Matlab....

Any help in the context will be greatly appreciated.
