Set the computer by myself

I used the laptop before,it's convenience to carry without anything,so I want to change to desktop. I want to set every part by myself,but I have no idea how much about this? And which part I have to notice?

Choice of motherboard is most important. It determines what type of CPU, RAM etc can be used.
