serial port to usb interface

hi

can anyone tell me how to interface a microcontroller to a PC by a usb.

actually the serial port isnt present in all systems so i wanted an alternate method i.e. the usb.

please dont suggest the serial port to usb converter. i want a direct usb interface

thanks.

Select a microprocessor with a USB port. To do native coding for a "soft" USB using general digital IO ports will be complex and difficult

for a small project susch as this I would use a PIC24FJ64GB002 which has an integrated USB controller
PIC24FJ64GB002
It comes in a 28 pin SDIP package so is easy to build a PCB.
Microchip provide an API to communicate with the USB and lots of example application programs
