Sensor for tracking distance with lower than 1mm accuracy??

Hi everyon,

I need to track a small object from a fixed position with 1mm accuracy, just need to know how far it is. What kind of solution do I need?

You can use an ultrasonic sensor to calculate the distance from nearly 2cm to 4m. Less than 1mm accuracy is possible with it. For example, a **broken link removed**.
