Seeking Advice - Best Approach to Learning Embedded Systems

can any one help me in atmega programming . i know nothing of embedded just i know some basic . i have some questions
1) which is the best programming language c or assembly i mean in learning
2) atmel is best or microchip
3) give me some usefull links like goolygum.com
4) how much time i required in learning embedded like months or years
4) is at89c51 or at89c2051 having inbilt adc

it is better to learn embedded c.
Both are good ,will select the programmer ,each controller have their own properties so selection is need which is most suitable .
