scanning column of dot matrix for display

Hi all,
i need reference or tutorial to scanning dot-matrix 5x7 display based on LED using parallel port. i used 8 DOT matrix display 5x7? how about the technique to scanning it? is 8 bit parallel enough to control 8 Dot matrix 5x7 ?

You can use 7bit to out data and use 3 bit (Data, CLOCK, RESET) to control the shift-register to scan the column
 

Can u draw the diagram ?? because i still confuse ..
