Sawtooth Generator: what is the purpose of 1N4001 here?

in the attached sawtooth generator, what is the purpose of the 1N4001 diode?

It forces the control pin and so the trigger level to about 0.6V.
The effect will be that the sawtooth starts at nearly 0V, instead of the usual 1/3 Vcc. That will also increase the amplitude of the sawtooth, which will be almost 2/3 Vcc instead of 1/3 Vcc.
