When is MII required?

Background: I have a 5 port ethernet switch, 1 port is connected to a microcontroller and the other 4 to another device. The microcontroller is interfacing with the ethernet switch through a SPI connection.

I read that MII connects a MAC block to a PHY. The MAC block allows for channel access in which several terminals connected to the same multi point transmission medium can transmit over it and share its capacity. If I do not require channel access as each terminal is connected to a different transmission medium, is MII by extension also not required?

If MII it is needed, why?

Thanks!
