I m working on an RF project using serial communications from a PIC to an RF module (something similar to Zigbee). I am wondering if i use a 1W Wifi amplifier in line with the antenna will this increase my range.

You would need gain at each end of the link. You would be better off with a gain antenna. This would increase both the transmitted and received signal level and not consume any power. One restriction is that this is a point to point link with fixed location terminals.

Okay thanks for the help. any idea where i would start looking for a gain antenna. I am using frequencies of around 400-900mhz

Try googling WiFi Yagi.
