there are planning tools available from various sources. The one which allows to play with it and learn is the trial version of TAP from Sofwright (www.softwright.com). Edx enginnering used to send an evaluation copy some times ago - now no Idea. Some of the bigger companies use their own developed softwares. Just do a google search and you will come to knowabout many of them
