Reprogram a PDA or similar device to be a unix terminal.

I would like to somehow reprogram a pda and load on some of my own software to make it a mac terminal. Can this be done? What language would it have to be in? I would like to have it be done in the oldest one I could find, just to have to look cooler. Kinda steam-punk kit-bashing.

Summary:
Load custom software on PDA. How?
