remote control decoder

my project is to make a remote control's protocol decoder
supposing that i have a remote control and dont know what its protocol so i wanna use my pic decoder to know it
using pic 16f877a and MIKROC
u know the recieved IR signal is a punch of pulses some are zeros and the others are ones
if i know the width of every pulse and the time between the pulses i can identify the protocol right ??
is there any way to know that guys please help me am stuck since a week here :(
and guys i dont want a certain decoder for RC5 protocol for examples i want this to be an any protocol
decoder .
