The best way in learning VHDL is to try to do some coding on your own. Reading tones of books will help you only if you have already done some digital designs in VHDL. Start with small logical blocks such as comparators, registers, adders, etc. and go to more complex sistems. As you proceed, problems will be encountered and then try to look for the answers in different books and articles.
For quick learning I recommed VHDL Starters guide (I don't remenber the name of the writer it was an Indian name). After that with Peter Asheden you can get deeper into VHDL.
I learned VHDL by reading VHDL guide that provided with Leonardo Spectrum synthesis tool. It has good, simple and synthesisable examples. Try to simulate and synthesise them too!
