The one i have seen had a microprogram (microassembler) and implemented some form of interpretator for upper level assembler programs. But that particular one is out now and replaced with conventional architecture.
This kind of specialized processors can not compete with conventional because of conventional microprocessors manufactorers has a good money injected from consumer market and product is more tested, faster and more reliable than specialised one.
Well may be for military and space applications could be exception.
F.e. Nokia uses Intel architecture in their GSM switches. And there are others started to use Intel and even windowz in enterprise products.
Cons - they suffer from viruses too ))....
Ooops, I thought Nokia uses ARM architecture with AMBA bus controllers, not Intel architecture! Quite interesting... How did you get this info?

Reconfigurable processor is a nice paradigm for new processors architecture. Imagine you can build your own instruction set, or imagine you can prepare differents set of instruction, and choose at each execution phase of your program what set you implement in your processor.
Some nice projects have been done in this domain in the 90s, with FPGA. They focused mainly on image analysis (DISC: The dynamic instruction set computer, by Wirthlin, Hutchings).
If you know other informations about similar projects, I would be very interested.

dont know what Nokia is using now , but 3-4 years ago they used intel architecture for sure. And not only Nokia but other telco brands .
I work as maintenance stuff with what i have mentioned above , and there is ongoing activity for those processsors replacement , now with outdated Alpha (development is very inertial) and then 64 bit intel architecture. This is something priprietary ASIC with flash specially designed for telecom platforms. Unfortunately that is all i can say.)
The Cypress PSoC is a reconfigurable processor allowing you to configure different analog and digital blocks and their I/O and even dynamically change these settings.
tencilica provides configurable processor ,and you can define your own instruction set, but i have no idea about reconfigurable processor,is it implemented by software? anyone can tell me more detail about the reconfigurable processor?
