racal 9087

Iam a newcomer to the EDA board and I have been reading the messages regarding the Racal 9087 sig gen..I have two in near new condition and have three that I repaired..All three had the notorious Error 80 problems and others...A little history might help.Racal designed these generators under contract to the U.S. Marine Corps for use in their airborne electronic systems. The contract stipulated that all servicing(except for some minor items) was to be performed at the factory.Consequently the modules that are contained in the generator are essentially sealed.Given the number and quality of these units still in existence the question is how to repair them..Racal discontinued any support sometime in 1998.

Here is a summary of required test equipment and the Error 80 problem resolution.

Assuming that the rear mounted int/ext 10mhz time switch is functional and an external 10mhz source has been tried to no avail, removal of the module stack is required. The reference loop(output) is where an internal inductor has to be adjusted.Ribbon cables and SMA terminated cables will be required. An aluminum plate with holes drilled to reach the adjustment has to be fabricated. The plate is required to insure proper shielding when the module's cover is removed.

Test equipment required for other problems
DMM
Spectrum analyzer
Signal generator
Ribbon cables
SMA terminated RF cables
For the digital portion of the generated a HP5004 or HP5005B signature analyzer.
Service manual TM 09092A/0909B-45/1..This is the manual that contains all the schematics ,signal levels and test routines...

Other common problems are ERROR codes,81,82,83,84,88.These are respectively,Output loop out of lock,FM systemPLL out-of-lock,FM sub PLL loop out-of-lock and output system AGC loop error. Some of thses are listed on the pull out card on the bottom of the generator.
The generator is very difficult to work on and fabricating the ribbon cables is a real nuisance.
