question: power MOSFET with clamped inductive load ?

Hello,
To study the switching behavior of a power MOSFET, a clamped inductive load is often used.
Attached is a diagram showing this clamped inductive load.
Can some someone explain why we need this type of load ?

Idea is to apply maximum possible stress on switch (MOSFET in this case) when it is switching. Clamped inductive load provides both, rated/test voltage (clamped part of circuit) and rated/test current (inductive part of circuit) simultaneously when switch is turn on/off. if you compare with resistive load, you will not get both of these conditions.
