Question on Transient Voltage Suppresor ciruitry

Hi there,

May I know why transil T1 has to be bi-directional? Wouldnt it be the same if T1 was uni-directional and in the same orientation as diode D1? Please see attached datasheet here, for diagrams. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. What I really wanted to know was why a bi-directional TVS (transil T1 in this case) is being used for this circuit. It seems transil T1 is used only for reverse transient over-voltage protection and as such wouldn't a uni-directional TVS suffice (since transil T2 handles the forward transient over-voltages)?
