Question about DSSS modulation

For direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) modulation the carrier signal occupies only a single channel unless there is interference, or it continuously hops over all channels of the band?

The question is in relation to 2.4 GHz ISM band and the available transceiver solution.
