Query on recognizing number

On a very basic level, what are the techniques for recognizing a spoken number and converting it to text ? Also, what steps should be taken in those techniques..

I'm sorry for coming back on this after a long time... why did you suggest HMM... I mean how would it be better than LPC or any other technique.. Please help. The numbers that I'm trying to identify are 0 to 9.
