Hi,
may I know if anyone has information of project papers/thesis related to PCB (design, quality, etc)
The purpose is that I would like to prepare my Master project paper related to this, by reviewing the
current issues. I am a Malaysian, and not many project/thesis related PCB is done here,
but there are many MNC giant such as Intel, Sony, etc.
Would appreciate if can get specific website for project papers/thesis related to PCB.
I have limited resources (state-of-art PCB softwares, machines, equipments, etc.)
I'll see what I can do.
Thanks!

Thanks Marche

I am interested to make a project paper about the comparison of PCB layout design software as below:

Zuken CR5000
Mentor Graphics PADS/Expedition
Altium
Cadence Orcad/Allegro

May I know how can I get the user guide/operation manuals for the softwares above?

And is there anyone doing the comparison?

Thanks!
Ng

Aah.... a typical work of an Application Engineer :)

Alright, official user guide / manual may not be available for these tools on the web. You can try getting them from respective tool users. But that will not help you to do a patrametric analysis of these tools because these manuals are intended to teach the user how to use a tool.

Typical comparison of PCB CAD tools is to be done based on the performance charecterestics of their auto routers. Ideally you should route a same PCB in all these tools and then mesure the number of passes, percentage of completion, quality of routing, number if vias / layer jumps, average net length, clean-up quality, adherence to constraints, etc., And in addition, ease of creating the board file, component library, importing and exporting the standard formats (DXF, IDF, Gerber etc)

I have myself compared between Zuken CADSTAR, PADS 2005, Expedition and Allegro, but more as a user of these tools and not from academic interest. There are lot many moe ways of testing these tools. And believe me if go as per user manuals, all tools will be state of the art :)

Hope this helps

i really wonder ,a project paper can be like this?
who is going to be benefited with this?

I have used Cadstar/Orcad/allegro/Pads but preparing such a document is only possible if you have used latest version of all the tools.

thanks CKS,
Hi abhi, for your info,
this project can help management to decide which software is the best to purchase to suit their intention.
cost, time, efficiency, quality, problem, risk, etc.
I had been the user for CR5000 for long time, we can test a PCB design in many ways as stated by CKS,
eg routing speed, processing time for DRC, intelligence, user friendly, etc.
I know some people had did project paper about mechanical CAD software comparison,
so it is not an issue here :)
the only problem is the P&C of user guide, I dont mind if can get older 1 version back.

i can suggest you to start making one excels sheet showing feature Vs tool and share in this forum.

so we can add some comments as well as any special feature.

NO, this is not allowed by the forum rules:
I have designed complex PCB's onall of the top 3 pakages (Zuken, Mentor, Cadence) so ALL packages can do the job. These comparisons are meaningless and a waste of space as everyone has their favorite package, What is more important is having someone who is competant at PCB design and willing to learn the chosen package, understand the importance of library creation and learn about the intricies of PCB design.
As to choosing a package the only way you can decide is try them yourself.
Further how do you equate features to cost etc etc how do you define userbility...
