I tried PikLab, and while it can compile programs for the 16F887, it doesn't support programming the device. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It seems that PICPgm, a very nice PIC programming software for Windows, runs perfectly under Wine. I'm still hoping for a native Linux program that will do the job, though.
