Problem with untarring a file

fo runtaring ia file i used the follo command as:

tar -xvf work.tar
but still its not getting untared.......wat could the reason b??
i'v etried all possible ways but could'nt get it.............can anyone help me out

maybe u should try to install the tar rpm first

check the extension if it is tar.gz you need to gunzip before untarring
