problem regarding viterbi decoder

hi,
i have implemented a constraint length 7 hard decision viterbi decoder. Now i want to know erroro correction capability of my decoder. i have read a formula
erroro correcting capability = (free distance-1)/2
If lets say this comes out to be 2, then out of how many bits it can correct 2 bits.

if anybody have any idea, please help me.

u can search on the RTL implementation of viterbi decoder on google , u will find a good thesis for ur porpose
