Power a PC with 12V

Hello everybody.
I want to power a PC directly from a 12V source.
I will not use HDD and other units. Only the mainboard, processor and ports.

How can I supply the mb to work optimal with his processor? Or... any ideas?
Thanks a lot.

Re: Power a PC with 12V

I do not think you can power a motherboard with just a 12 volt supply?
Most motherboards need a 12V, 5V and 3v3 supply rail.
You will have to study the data sheet for your motherboard to see what supply rails it needs.

Power a PC with 12V

you have to make a supply that gives 12v 5v 3.3v -5v and -12v for ATX type . and you have to give powergood signal also.

The voltages produced by AT/ATX/ATX-2 power supplies are:
+3.3 Volts DC (ATX/ATX-2)
+5 Volts DC (AT/ATX/ATX-2)
-5 Volts DC (AT/ATX/ATX-2)
+5 Volts DC Standby (ATX/ATX-2)
+12 Volts DC (AT/ATX/ATX-2)
-12 Volts DC (AT/ATX/ATX-2)

Re: Power a PC with 12V

Hy and thank you for posting.

I think the easiest solution is to use an UPS.
I will connect the 12V source directly to UPS and the UPS to PC.

LE: thanks rajudp for sheets. Very useful. :D

Re: Power a PC with 12V

There are supliers that sell power convertors ( DC-DC- Convertors) for IN CAR PCs made using EPIA boards. Search for these terms and you shall certainly want whar you are looking for.

and do you really think it will work ?
would be glad to know ,what kind of UPS it is.

-cheers

Power a PC with 12V

you can make a power supply with the required voltages levels. since you are not using any HDD or any other devices the power can be get down. How you are going to use? . ie run your program

Re: Power a PC with 12V

Is 12V the must?
May be you can supply your PC with dedicated battery.
If the last is the case you can supply your PC from 150V DC voltage delivered by 14 batteries 12V each, connected in serial.
AC is not necessary to for the PC power supply.
(There is a rectifier and a capacitor at the PC power supply input, these elements convert 110 AC into 150VDC).
If you have already 12DC and this must be you power source, the 12Vdc->150Vdc converter is simpler than 12 Vdc -> 110 Vac converter .
If your PC needs 230 Vac (is not switchable to 110 Vac) than your battery should have 300V instead of 150V.
Be carefull 150V from batteries is as hazardous as 110V ac from the mains !

Re: Power a PC with 12V

I want circuit convert 12v to -5v and -12v .

Power a PC with 12V

you can make a 12 v to 300-350v dc power supply and connect the smps direct to this.
