Hi guys,

I have attached a diagram which was printed on the label of an ignitor from a HPS security light. I understand everything but the connection points on the transformer.

You can see in the diagram, there are 3 connection points on the transformer- How do they correspond to the 4 normal points (i.e. 2in [step up/down] 2out) on a 2 coil transformer?

Thanks for looking.

It Doesn't appear to Be a Normal, 4 Terminal Transformer.
These are Isolating Transformers.

It appears to be a 3 Terminal "Autotransformer".
These are Non-Isolating Transformers.

An "Autotransformer" is a Single Winding, with a Tap off at an appropriate number of turns to get the desired voltages.

i m not getting ur point?

This transformer is Autotransformer which uses to incease the efficiency than power transformer the mid terminal is used to increase output power , if u want to be more about Autotransformer write to me here then i will put all thing about autotransformer here.

thanks guys, really i should have worked it out earlier. i read alot of material about HID circuits over the past few days and im getting the hang of things- before i just didnt realise i was lacking fundamental knowledge of transformers and their uses.

it turns out there are 2 types of HID ignitor- one contains its own transformer and the other doesnt. the former is used with a 2 coil series transformer and the latter is used with a single coil tapped transformer- as chemelec described for my diagram.

i have the wrong ballast for my ignitor which is the source of my confusion. i've worked out a few options for my project and the components i have wont go to waste so i'm happy enough.
