Pittman Motor Control using L 298.

I am using L-293 for control of 48 v and 2-3 A current pittman motors. The ics are heating up pretty badly and burning inspite of the fact that i am using heat sinks as well. What are my best options. please suggest some fruit ful ideas!!!
 


I am actually using L298n to control the motion of pitmaNN MOTOR (48 VOLTS, 2.88 amps) . i am using 5 L298 ICs in parallel to drive our motor. Some times the ics work properly with 48 volts ,while some time it burns even at 24 volts!!! i have already burnt 10 L298N ics . i dont knw wats the real problem . please help!!!
