PIC microcontroller based UPS ?

microcontroller based ups

Hi all,

I would like to design a PIC microcontroller based UPS ( 230V, 500VA, square wave output).

Kindly suggest a microcontroller from PIC family for this design. If you have got any usefull links or any other information on this topic please share.

Please note that I am new to UPS and a beginner of PIC, so watever information you give will be valuable to me.

Hi all,

I request your kind guidance on a project on PIC16C72 based UPS.

I have decided the spec. for my UPS as, 230V, 500VA, 50Hz square wave out, Offline.

I think the following functions are to be implemented.

50Hz PWM
Calculate the PI and update PWM
Monitor the Battery voltage
Monitor AC power line
Charging the battery
Serial interface for calibration

I have recently downloaded salvo lite from its website. Will it be ok to use such an RTOS for implementing these functions?

I am not asking you to share any code you have developed. But please give some suggestions and advice to start this project confidently.

I have all the development tools required for Microchip PIC microcontroller based system development.

exact same requirements, so I suggest to move to one topic so we
can assist you both in the design of that UPS, it seems to me like a
school project. Is it? In this case we have to help you guys with 2
different designs, yes that's possible by using different ferrite
tranformers and drive circuits.

Type PICREF-1 and PICREF2 in the Microchip site search.

These are designs for UPS and Intelligent Battery charger.

They look complicated, but are state of the art. The documentation will give you the bnasic theory and much more.

Yes I agree, but they use hard to find parts, so let these guys tell us
what they need, UPOL asked me for a square wave output, which is
easier to implement, at my work place we design a UPS with 3300VA
sine wave output, and takes very costly components to filter that
PWM output and many feedback loops for current, voltage and
current phase correction. So let's keep it simple here.

Hello Tornado,

ust for the sake of the topic, Single chip ups can be implemented using Motorola DSP56F80X or TI 320C420. Such solutions include all: battery charger, PFC, inverter and fault management.
If you have worked on any such advanced platform, let me know.

Yes DSPs from Texas are good, but for ITP and UPOL they need something simple with square wave output and PIC MCU, now
I write some code for the output stage, later I will add some
feedback/protection OVP/UVP and OCP.

I have assembled the code from this site, next I will simulate it
to check the input-output functions, the code is written for PIC16C84,
I have to modify for for a PIC with internal ADC and add routines for battery charge.

OK guys, what about starting with the battery charger, that means
you have to get a transformer 230V>24V@500mA, a bridge rectifier
and other parts, so ITP and UPOL are you ready? Next post I will
have the parts list ready.

are we connecting the two 12V battery in series??
or it is a 12-0-12 CT transformer. If we are working with a 12V battery(2 Battery in parallel) then the transformer of the charging circuit should be 12V...please clear my confusion...

When we charge a lead acid battery we use a constant current source,
across the battery we get a variable voltage but we pass a stable
current thru. Now we need higher voltage in order to pass that current
because the internal battery resistance is increasing more and more
as it's discharging. When battery reaches full charging voltage point
we switch to trickle charge (just a small amount of current to keep
the battery charged). I hope that is simple enough.

OK 2x12V it's fine we use it as 24V
