Physical Antenna for Smart Antenna system

Can anybody help me that what type of physical antennas should I use to build a Smart Antenna system. It may λ/2 dipole, Microstrip (Patch) antenna array, etc.
Kindly help me in detail.

it depends on the functionality you need to implement. can u give more details?
 

It is basically the first step where I have to just decide generally what will be the best antenna for smart antenna system. Only antenna to be decide no operation frequency no any other thing.
