PCB tracking layout advice

Hi all,
I am currently doing a layout that has a main power supply track of 12V @ 3A. I need to add a LED + resistor to this for indication purposes.
Do I need to have the track for the LED + resistor the same width as the main 3A track or can I get away with a thinner track width, the LED + resistor will be
operating at 15mA.
I think I can get away with a thinner track but just wanted some advice.

The track only needs to to be sized to carry the required current; does your LED draw 3 amps?

Hi Barry,
No the main supply voltage is 12V@3A, the LED + resistor will run at 15mA but will be used as an indicator for the 12V line.

So, reading your reply, am I correct in saying that the LED + resistor can be a thinner track (despite it being taken from the 12V 3A line?

sure, but remember usually the maximum led current is 20 mA..
