I just want to share my experience in reverse engineering a PCB which is already in production.
One of my friend lost his PCB design and gerber files for a successful product (automotive domain). The existing PCB vendor closed his facility and unable to get the gerbers from them as well. When he approached me, I took up this as a challenge and took a bare board (double sided board) and also he provided me BOM, and recreated the design with 100% match to the original design. He then ordered the PCBs from different vendor. The highlight here is the output is same as existing board that are in production, I even generated netlist, BOM and schematic 4 pages.

That's a pretty good attempt! I wrote a trilogy to my PCB-RE book collection, PCB-RE: Real-World Examples and got it published in February 2019. Your post came a bit late or I would have asked you to be one of the contributors.

You can find it on Amazon in paperback and ebook formats:

Paperback: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1797999958
ebook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087V4GJ94

Take care and stay safe!
