PCB Patch Antenna at 200MHz size

Hi,

I'm looking to design a microstrip antenna operating at 200MHz :

The calculations for length and width for a rectangular patch come out to be 0.34m and 0.44m...

Is there any way/technique to reduce the patch size while operating at the same frequency?

Ceramic substrate with (very) high permittivity can be used for shrinking.

You can just load the edges with a high permitivity material rather than the full substrate as this would be expensive and heavy for such an antenna. The downside is that it makes it harder to design.
 

You can use PIFA type antenna to reduce the size. But gain depends on efficiency for patch type antennas. height should not be less than 0.025*lambda to get good gain. I will recommend IFA type antennas with smaller size and good gain.

Designing PIFA seems to be a good option for me.

antenna-theory.com says that the length of width of the patch (for a PIFA) should add up to lambda/4,
i.e. W + L = lambda/4

In this case, can we choose any length/width such that they add up to lambda/4?
 

You should consider the prerequisites of the PIFA design equations.

As any λ/4 antenna, it's operation depends on the existence of a (theoretically infinite) ground plane, at least a plane that's large compared to the antenna.
