GPS antenna

HI

I am using GPS for Tracking.
Currently I am using and external active antenna which I fix above the car.
for reliability I prefer to use a patch antenna and embed it with the GPS module.
MY Question is could the patch antenna work fine if it's embedded within the enclosure of the device?
and if the whole device is fixed within the car engine?

What do you think?

i dont think its a good idea, first there are a lot of metal enclosures second a lot of rf noise from spark plugs etc, maybe its best if you use the ext antenna cable but instead of using that antenna you use a patch on the outside, you can get about 3db gain, by personal experience you will get good snr from about 6 to 7 satellites depending on when and where you are.

anyway you can always try. By the way attached are lab report of one gps antenna i made long ago( its in spanish but it may not be hard for an automated translator to do the job.)

hahaha its in spanish. i wrote it for a lab, i dont think any usefull gain would work inside a metallic enclosure of any kind, but you can try using a plastic enclosure, the problems are metallic plates blocking the signal

im sorry, but i sincerely dont feel like translating it because it uses such a technical languaje that any automated translator ca do the job and i just dont have the time.

Thanks Again.

I am going to use a plastic enclosure but it will be inside the car saloon.
My Question is , dose the signals passing from the car glass will be enough to achive good gain?
