"packed" and "unpacked" in radix convers

Anyone can explain: what is the difference between "packed" and "unpacked" in, for example, converting 8-bit binary into 2-digit BCDs.

When it is packed, two bcd numbers are in the 8 bit byte. When it is not packed, each byte has one bcd number in the lower nibble.
