Obstacle detection/distance measurement

i am confuse which sensor to be used for my Project that is autonomous car i personaly feel that Sonars are the best choices but they are too much expensive is there any best replacement of this sensor or the place where i can get it with low prices

May be this IR one Sharp GP2D12J0000F IR Package, but it is also a little bit costly.
