newbie req links/refs for datapath layout methodologies

well i'm facing problems with layout designing.
tools i'm using: microwind / electric (is there any other free tool for win32 except magic!)

some how able to design standard cell design, but could not able to design
alus/adders/shifter using datapath approach...

need refs/links related datapath layout (and other layout techniques)
