First you have to read the concepts related to combinational and sequencial logic
and get the clear idea about the functionality of all the com and seq components
go trough the basics books maris Mano and R P jain and solve the questions given in the back side of the book.

u can work on the front end simulator Active HDL from ALDEC , www.aldec.com
so that you will have clear idea about the simulations also....

Apart from knowing this, one also needs to learn and practice State Machine design and implementation..

Get ur fundamentals in digital design right initially...then tat wil help u immensly in t vlsi field..concentrate on timing issues as well
