im starting to program pic 16f877a micro controller using mp lab. can any one tel me how to start mp lab and what compiler i should use and also some sample programs.

You can download all the compilers from Microchip (C18, C30, C32, XC8, XC16, XC32), CCS C Compiler from ccsinfo.com and Hi-Tech C Compilers from Hi-Tech website. Google for it.

Some work in PRO mode for 45 days. You can use them in lite mode for free. For microchip compilers download the update installer files.

Among others in addition to the aforementioned programming compilers you can use MikroC. Its good and easy for starters, you have lots of existing libraries, and many example codes. Also great free tutorial ebooks can be find on manufacturer web site for learning PIC with C. MikroC is free for download and its fully functional up to 2K of program words of output code size which can be just enough for simple applications.
