Need help for IR Transmitter and Receiver

Hi all,

I would like to design the remote control. I need to know about the circuit and theory of IR Transmitter and Receiver. If someone can provide me the information, please. Actually, the receiver I want to detect by using PIC MCU. For Transmitter, I want to know the encoder chip or theory, perhaps I can modify the PIC for the transmitter too. Thanks a lot.
