need clarification in convolutional codes

Can anyone explain me the function of symbol mapper and interleaver in convolutional codes....... please help me... it will be very much favour if you give me an idea to my question tat after making soft decision , is it possible to make hard decision after interleaver in the same convolutional code system at the same time...........please clarify my doubt ............:cry:..........thanks in advance.
