Need any resource about design tech of ethernet phy

I have to evaluate the quality of kinds of ethernet physical layer ic.I want to study the design theory of PHY.ieee 802.3 spec the PHY's function,but i have to kown basic design methods in advance.for example ,a DSP core run in AC101 IC.Really?
