I need to power a 24VDC solenoid with a battery supply of 12V.
The solenoid is max 36W and only need to be activated for 3 seconds.
The circuit must be able to reactivate the solenoid within 30 seconds if needed.

I would like to use a voltage doubler ( maybe controlled by a PIC) for this job.

Can a FET be used for this solenoid activation? which one is suitable for this job?

Any idea's or schematic's .... thanks.

physical limitations

You are in the energy transfer region (100 Joules) where the most economical solution is an ordinary switching power supply. Using the usual capacitor only switching circuits requires hefty capacitors of the milifarad+ size. Linear Technology Co. has quite a few demonstration boards you could buy as well as free CAD software. I would suggest that the cheapest and less frustrating method is to buy a ready made supply module if this is a one time need.

Hi

First you can find few dc-dc converters that can give you the 24V

For your second question you can use a fet for switch him but you
must protect the output with a diode (some fets have internal diode)

I have seen switched cap voltage doublers that will do just what you discribe (not regulated though). Check out h__p://w_w.zaneinc.com/user/Ds-avd-l.pdf this commercial product.

For switching the valve I would recommend the IPS031 or IPS521.

If you locate a schematic I would like one too for my files.

thanks,

Usualy Selonoids needs high energy at beginning.
you can reduce the power after the contacs moves.

If you apply the 24 v relay and if you reduce voltage to 12v yo can see
relay works.

Thank you all for your reply.
Bunalmis: This is very interesting, I'll try this one.
